Your customers begin to assess your business before they even walk in the door. They notice the outdoor signage, branding, and brightly colored “sale” messages. That’s what they’re used to, because most branding focuses on the visual.

But did you know that what your customers smell might be even more important? Aromas have a direct pathway to the part of our brain that controls mood and memory. For marketers looking to influence customer behavior, scent is the most potent sense to tap into. Consider adding commercial fragrance solutions to your business to see how fragrances affect mood. Creating a welcoming environment where they feel better, stay longer, and buy more begins with the right scent.

But what are the best scents for businesses, and what makes an effective fragrance for your commercial properties? The answers are revealed when we analyze a fragrance’s parts—its top, middle, and base notes. Uncovering the secrets behind how these notes interconnect can help your business create a scent to remember.

Breaking Down Fragrance Notes: What Are Top, Middle, and Base Notes?

Like a song, a fragrance is made of multiple parts. To understand how this works, it’s helpful to think of them as top, middle, and base notes. These are sometimes called the “olfactory trifecta.” Each has a separate and distinct role to play. But they also work together, interweaving and playing off one another to create a fragrance that hits all the right notes.

Fragrance Evaporation Pyramid

Crowning this trifecta are the top notes, light scents that pop first and evaporate quickly. Middle and base notes evaporate more slowly, lengthening the top notes while making the scent fuller and more comprehensive as time passes.

Top Notes: The First Impression

Top notes make the first impression, making up 15% to 25% of the overall fragrance. Short-lived but still important, these headnotes are the first hints of the upcoming olfactory experience. Their purpose is to draw you in and make you curious for more.

It’s not uncommon for top notes to feature citrus fragrance oils. Options like lime, lemon, and grapefruit get things started with a fresh, uplifting scent.

The compounds within these top notes have lower boiling points and are likely to include alcohol and water to facilitate fast evaporation. They stay with you for 5 to 15 minutes, then gently dissipate and give way to middle notes, often called the heart of the aroma.

Middle Notes: The Heart of the Fragrance

The middle notes of a fragrance are like its heart. They make up 30% to 40% of the entire scent, and are the most memorable. They begin to emanate as the headnotes fade. Warm and well-rounded, you can smell these aromas for 20 to 60 minutes, possibly longer. Middle notes complement the top notes, forming a more lasting impression while keeping everything balanced.

Scent experts choose a variety of scents for the middle notes, but they lean toward clean aromas. Floral and herbal notes like lavender, rose, and jasmine are popular, as are spicier scents like cinnamon, anise, and nutmeg.

The compounds within these middle notes are larger, so they evaporate more slowly. They’re not as water- or alcohol-soluble as the top notes, allowing them to linger for an hour or more. After that, the middle notes begin to melt away, and the bottom notes emerge.

Base Notes: The Lasting Impression

At the base of the pyramid are the base notes. These long-lasting fragrances have an especially important purpose. Making up about 50% of the scent profile, they deepen the aroma, adding layers and complexity as they are slowly released into the air.

Traditionally, base notes tend to be earthy and musky. Often described as rich and warm, they can also be “woodsy.” Examples of commonly chosen base notes include sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, cloves, and rosemary.

The molecules in these compounds are more substantive, which gives them staying power. Heavier and less volatile than the top and middle notes, base notes may linger for six to eight hours. They dissipate ever so slowly, anchoring the scent in your memory as the last vestiges of scent fade away.

The Science of Evaporation: How Scent Changes Over Time

People think about scent all the time but don’t often think about how scent changes over time. As shown by the illustration above, not all scents are equal, in terms of their duration.

Fragrances are mixtures with multiple components. They are surprisingly complex, especially when examined scientifically. Different variables—amount of scent, airflow, temperature, time—contribute to how powerful a scent is, and how long it lasts.

Are you curious about the chemistry?

Testing your Commercial Fragrance

With a simple experiment, you can begin to understand the complexities of a fragrance and even begin to pick out its top, middle, and base notes. Start by diffusing a fragrance oil into a closed area with no other aromas. Within a few seconds, you should smell the top notes, which are often citrus-based and uplifting. Then, exit the room.

Come back in about 15 minutes and breathe deeply. What do you smell? The overall fragrance should have changed slightly, with the top note fading and the middle notes percolating.  You are now experiencing the heart of the scent. Leave the room again.

Return around the 45-minute or 1-hour mark. By this time, the fragrance should have transitioned again, with the middle notes giving way to the richness and depth of the base notes. Do you smell something musky, something warm and woodsy, or something else?

When you do this, you’re not only learning about the power of scent. You’re also putting yourself in your customers’ shoes and experiencing the aroma as they would. The insights you gain can help your business smell more attractive. When done right, scent marketing helps influence your customers from the moment they walk in the door…if not before!
